Clarion’s MiND - Half Nav, Half Amazing!

Clarion MiND

Question my 12v Fan, can you check your MySpace with your Navigation unit? No? You don’t get e-mail on it either? Perhaps take pictures? Shame!

Pretty soon, all the navigations of tomorrow will just be tiny portable touchscreen all-in-one computers, which technically Clarion’s new MiND is. MiND features a 5.3″ wvga lcd touchscreen, capable of 800 x 480 pixels of bliss. Access to 12vblog.com via browser and WiFi built in, and built on a Linux OS. It even has a built-in Camera on it. The only thing this thing can’t do is place calls…. technically, but with built in Bluetooth and Microphone, it can through your phone. Oh yea, did we mention it does the whole Navigation thing too?

Other specifications include:

  • Intel Menlow (Based on Silverthorne processor and Poulsbo Chipset)
  • 256MB DRAM
  • 4GB Flash Memory for Storage
  • WiFi
  • GPS Antenna/Receiver
  • Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery
  • Amplifier
  • Speaker
  • Headphone Jack
  • 3G Data Module (Future Capability)
  • Mobile WiMAX (Future Capability)

The price?? We’d like to know as well. By far, this just might be one of the most all-inclusiveportable navigation units we’ve seen thus far. We’ll keep you posted on any updates.

Sony refreshes it’s Nav-U GPS line - Adds NV-U73T and NV-U83T

Sony's Nav-U83t

Sony has added the NV-U73T and U83T to their portable navigation offerings, which are available to pre-order right now as we speak. The U83T (pictured above) sports a 4.8″ touchpanel widescreen display, with the smaller sibling, the U73T (pictured below), getting a 4.3″er. The main feature difference between the two is the Bluetooth Handsfree capability and POSITION Plus is standard on the 83T. What is POSITION Plus you say?

In addition to the SiRF Star III GPS chip, POSITION Plus includes a pressure sensor, gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor. The nav-u device uses these additional sensors to calibrate where drivers are so they can safely plan ahead and won’t miss turns coming out of tunnels or from in-between tall buildings.

Other features shard by both units include a Text To Speech capability, Gesture Command, and access to Real Time Traffic Information channel.

Sony's Nav-U73t

Pre-order price for these units are $499 and $349 respectively. They are slated to be available on or around 02/22/2008. Looks wise, this unit sure is a beauty

Cobra joins the GPS party, navigate your way past moving violations too!

Cobra

Looks like Cobra is trying to spread their wings into the overly crowded Portable GPS market. While they are at it, they are not only targeting the Baby Boomers, with their large icons, but they are also aiding them to avoid the long arm of the law along their way to their destinations. That’s because the Nav One 5000 has the built in ability to display red-light and speed camera warnings. Another unique feature is the ability to select you “favorite” brand of store, for example McDonalds. So while you navigate, you will always know where the nearest Big Mac is! The screen is a 5″er with touch capability.

Is that enough to justify dropping $510, the suggested MSRP, to acquire one of these baby’s? Let me entice you with the added features that include Bluetooth integration, real-time traffic information, and updatable maps via pc to name a few. Still not persuaded? Can’t really blame you. Competition is stiff, and for the money, there are better offerings. But then again, this is only the beginning for Cobra, and I’m sure things will only get better. Stay tuned!

Pioneer shows up and shows-off - AVIC-F500BT aka “LINC” FTW!!

Pioneer's AVIC-F500BT aka Linc

In the market for a portable navigation unit? Well this ain’t your run of the mill GPS unit offered by them “other boys”. This my friend is what Pioneer calls a “hybrid navigation system”, with a feature set to justify the title! So what’s so special about this AVIC-F500BT aka “LINC”? Well off the top you get a 5.8″ WVGA touchscreen; integrated Bluetooth for hands free calling; advanced voice control technology for your iPOD (take that SYNC!); SD Slot for playback of various music files; Back-up camera integration fuctionality. All in all while being super sleek and sexy, coming in at a 7″w x 4″h and a slimness to rival Nicole Richie at .75″d. Who’s doesn’t want to tell their iPod what to do?

Oh did I mention, it does the GPS thing also, with MSN Direct services for traffic and data services. Mapping data provided by Tele Atlas with coverage for the US of A, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii.

Look for this baby to drop in Spring 2008. No price information as of yet, but we’d expect hope it comes in under $500! Stay tuned for more info! Read on for additional pictures and the full press release.

How about a little Google with your Navigation? Magellen Maestro Elite 5340+GPRS

Magellen Maestro 5340

Magellan is teaming up with Google to provide you with this Maestro Elite unit pictured above, the 5340+GPRS. What does this mean to you? How about having the “Google” power at your finger tips with integrated Google Local Search that enables you to get deep, location-specific information on the go. That’s due in part to the integrated wireless internet connection through the GPRS. That all aside, this baby packs in more punch with 3-D landmarks and buildings, 6 million points of interest (POI), a USB port, and advanced voice command functionality to name a few, all on a 5-inch WQVGA widescreen.

As you know all of this comes at a price, a  HEFTY one at that… Start saving now, cause this baby will cost you $1299 when it drops this March. Worth it? I can think of a handful of full featured headunits that I’d rather spend the greenbacks on, but hey. For the full press release, read on!

Asus struts it’s GPS stuff - R700 3D GPS Navigator

Asus R700 3D GPS Navigator

Asus comes out swinging on the GPS competition with this sexy entrant with 3D visuals. Info is pretty limited on this unit, other then the fact that it’s touchscreen, I’d guess 4.3″er, and has the ability to play MP3s, videos, and show photos as well as bluetooth phone capabilities. It’s stated to land in the $400 range when it does drop. Stay tuned for more info.
